I grew up in Bettendorf, Iowa. I was 24, wrapping up my last season of competitive water skiing, when a teammate brought a mountain bike along to our last event in Blaine, Washington. I had never heard of mountain biking and was instantly hooked! I always wanted a dirtbike, and this didn't feel far off. When I got home from that trip, I bought a $500 hardtail and started riding the local Iowa singletrack. I've competed in several sports since I was a kid. I don't think I've ever played a sport without taking it to competition. So when I started mountain biking, I immediately signed up for the Iowa XC series and then planned my move to Utah around the Utah Downhill series. A five-month road trip in the van, racing both downhill and enduro in North America, and dabbling in some freeride events.
